In our solar system, we have 8 planets. These planets revolve around the Sun and each planet has its own orbit. According to most of the astronomers, our solar system has two parts: the inner solar system and the outer solar system. In the former, there are 4 planets namely Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. These 4 planets are closest to the giant fire ball i.e. The sun.
The other 4 planets are located in the outer system. They are called Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. These gas giants are huge in size but lighter in terms of mass.
What Is The Solar System?
In our solar system, apart from the 8 planets, there are several moons, comets and asteroids as well. The gravitational pull of the sun attracts everything around it. The planets try to fly away but end up revolving around the sun due to the gravity. Some planets have several moons that circle these plants. Our Earth, for instance, has only one moon. Let’s know more about each of the spinning giants of our system.
The closest planet to the sun is mercury. Still it’s around 36 million miles away from the sun. Due to this closeness, the temperature on its surface is very high. During the Mercury day, the temperature can be hundreds of Celsius.
In our solar system, Venus is the brightest. If you know where to look, you can see this planet in daylight with naked eyes. Since Venus comes up before the sun, it is also called the Morning Star. Venus can also been in the evening just after the sun goes down. At this time, it’s called the Evening Star.
Planet Earth is the only planet that has life (according to the research that has been done so far. At least, this is what we know so far. The atmosphere of Earth consists of 21% of oxygen. It’s 93 million miles away from the sun.
Mars is next to Earth in the orbit. It’s around half the size of earth but has almost no oxygen in its atmosphere. That’s the reason it has no discovered life. NASA is getting ready to get people on Mars in the next few decades.
Jupiter is the biggest and most powerful planet in our solar system. Its mass is 300 times greater than the mass of Earth. It’s named after the Roman sky god. Greeks called it Zeus.
Saturn is on No. 6. This giant ball looks the most beautiful when seen through a good telescope.
Without a good telescope, you can’t see Uranus. However, it’s not as big as the Jupiter.
Neptune caused a lot of excitement among astronomers when it was discovered. For the first time, Neptune was seen from an observatory of Berlin in 1846. It can only be seen through a telescope.
So, this was an introduction to 8 planets in our solar system. Pluto was the 9th but astronomers removed it from the list due to its small size.
