Light sounds light is a project that aims to explore all the senses involved into the photographic process. Thanks to a new experimental technique, called audiophotography, the impression that the viewer gets is of total participation, curiosity, wonder.
After 3 years and 6 different tries I got to the ultimate version of the setup I use to take audiophotos, you can check it out here:
Thanks to this setup I am able to start recording the sound of a scene 5 seconds before the shutter clocks and then 5 more seconds after it does. This way, I have a clip of 10 seconds for each photo, complete with audio. I then proceed to edit each audiophoto in this way:
black screen + sound for 5 seconds; shutter sound is heard; photo + sound for further 5 seconds.
The possible outcomes to this are three:
• The sound prepares your mind to a certain image that eventually appears
•The sound prepares your mind to a certain image but the one that appears is out of context (imagine a picture taken from inside a car, pointing out of the window: the sound will be that of the radio, but the image will be totally different)
•The sound is so weird or difficult to understand that your mind is free to wonder what is going to come out and waits curiously
I am currently working on an exhibition based on augmented reality technology in which you will point at empty frames that hang on gallery walls with your smartphone and as you do this you will see the clip appear inside the frame and the sound coming out of your device.
The project will be introduced officially to the public at Macro Museum in Rome in 2019.
